How to Get on Top When People Search “Hotel Near Me”

Sinan Moosa, digital marketer in Kannur

Think about the last time you were hungry or needed a room in a new place. You opened Google and typed “hotel near me” or “restaurant near me”. Then you went to one of the first 3 places you saw. Most people do the same.

So if your hotel or restaurant is not in those first 3, you are losing customers every day. The good news is that you can fix this with simple steps, and most of them are free.

I’m Sinan, a digital marketer in Kannur, and I have done this for local restaurants here. Let me explain in a simple way.

How Google decides who is on top

When someone searches “hotel near me”, Google looks at three things:

  • Distance: How close is your place to the person.
  • Relevance: Does your profile match what they are searching for.
  • Popularity: Do you have good reviews, photos and a name people know.

You can’t change distance. But you can improve the other two very much.

Step 1: Make your Google Business Profile

This is the most important step. If you don’t have a Google Business Profile, Google may not show you in “near me” searches at all.

I saw this in a restaurant in Mattool. They were not visible on Google, so people nearby could not find them. After I made their profile, they could be found on Google Maps.

Go to Google Business Profile, search your hotel name and claim it. If it is not there, create it.

Step 2: Fill everything, don’t leave empty

A half-filled profile does not work well. Make sure you have:

  • Correct name, address and phone number
  • Opening and closing time (change it for holidays also)
  • Right category, like “Hotel”, “Restaurant” or “Family restaurant”
  • A short description of your place, in simple words
  • Menu, room types or services
  • Link to your website or Instagram

Step 3: Add real photos

People want to see before they come. Add clear photos of:

  • Outside of the building, so they can find you easily
  • Rooms, tables and food
  • Parking and entrance

Use your own photos. Add new ones every few weeks. A profile with fresh photos looks active.

Step 4: Ask for reviews

Reviews are a big thing in Kerala. People trust other people more than ads.

  • Ask happy customers to give a review. Just ask nicely at the billing counter.
  • Put a QR code on the table or at the reception that opens your review page.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad. Reply politely and don’t argue.

Never buy fake reviews. Google can find them, and customers can also feel it.

Step 5: Keep your name, address and phone same everywhere

Your hotel name, address and number should be exactly the same on Google, Facebook, Instagram, your website and other listing sites. If they are different, Google gets confused and may not trust your profile.

Step 6: Use words people really search

On your website and profile, write the words people use. For example “hotel in Kannur”, “family restaurant near Kannur railway station”, or “rooms near Kannur beach”. Write these in a natural way. Don’t repeat the same words again and again.

Step 7: Post updates on your profile

You can post offers, new dishes and festival specials on your Google profile. It is free and many owners forget it. It tells Google and customers that your place is active.

Step 8: Have a mobile-friendly website

Most people search on mobile. If your website opens slowly or looks bad on the phone, they will leave. Keep it simple, with your location, phone number, photos and a map.

Small mistakes to avoid

  • Wrong phone number or old timing
  • No replies to reviews
  • Using only logo or old photos
  • Using a business name with extra keywords added, like “Best Hotel in Kannur Cheap Rooms”. Google can remove your profile for this.

How long does it take?

Don’t expect it in 2 days. Some things like photos and correct details can help in a few weeks. Reviews and ranking grow slowly. Keep doing the small things every week and you will see the change. No one can promise a number 1 spot, so be careful of anyone who does.
